HDR pipeline rendering

What is the difference between a typical HDR rendering pipeline and a normal rendering pipeline? (i.e. differences in bpp? Some additional post-processing steps?)

The pipelines are pretty similar. Keep in mind that now you can use 3 floats (e.g. RGB) to represent light sources. This allows you to set the brightness of the light sources MUCH brighter or dimmer.

As already mentioned, you need to use a floating point rendering target.

Do not saturate your light shaders, as this pinches you to a range of 0 to 1.
