Simulate a game’s flight algorithm?

Greetings to all

I am in the design phase of one of my hobby projects. I am going to develop a 3D fighting game. (inspired by HAWX). But I wonder how AI works for enemy ships? I think they do not move along the path (finding the path on the chart), as in FPS games. What algorithms can I use to move enemy ships? Are there any AI libraries that I can use for this?

Note. I am using irrlicht engine, C ++ as a development environment.
