"@android: drawable / ic_" vs "@ * android: drawable / ic_"

Does anyone know where I can find documentation on an asterisk? Apparently, it overrides the protection of the 'private' variables in the android.R.drawable subclass.

@ * android is used to access private resources. These resources can be changed or deleted between the two versions of Android, so you NEVER use them. This applies only to frame use.
