Using drag and drop on websites?

Question

As I would now like to develop the best webapps, and then the main php and javascript that I am creating now, I would like to know how web developers create some of the amazing sites that I have used over the past few years.

For example, on some sites that I visit, they have the ability to drag items from the palette onto a web page. I think mainly about some of the online charting tools I've seen. How do they do it because I'm currently puzzled.

I would like to start creating these types of websites, and currently I have no idea how to proceed. First I want to create some small tester websites that will allow for very simple drag and drop.

If someone can point me in the right directions in terms of links to textbooks or libraries that have this feature, I would be very grateful.
