How to create a quality screensaver of an odd shape similar to VS 2010?

I saw some neat splash screens like VS 2010, Adobe products, etc. I know that in VS.NET you can set the color of transparency, etc., but I could never make one look nice, have some jagged edges or problems with color on the edges. For example, I could create a black circle with a magenta color as a transparent color, and I tried various alias options in Adobe PhotoShop CS4.

Can someone direct me or provide an example of how to make pleasant, as we see, when starting VS 2010?
