How many files can I safely store in the Windows Server 2008 r2 directory?

I mean a website with image galleries. Let's say there is one directory in which all thumbnails are stored and another directory in which full-size images are stored. How many pairs of images can be safely stored?

Or, if there is no good dry and dry answer, should I just try it with 30,000 images?
