PHP app for sale

I wanted to get some thoughts on selling a PHP application (CMS). I intend to offer a free version, which may include advertising or limit it in some way. My main problem is how to determine if a user has purchased a license or a paid version or not.

My idea is to have a file (license.php) that will check the variable for one in my database and make sure that it matches the purchased domain. Is it a good idea if the client server may not have a twist or is there another way to do this?

Also, as soon as I installed $licensed = true, how could I make sure that it continues to change other things throughout the application. For example, if I had something like this:

if(!$licensed){
showads();
}

I think there is no way to prevent them from simply commenting on this section or its modification.

I don’t have too much trouble in general with this, but I would like to see if there are any better ways people could come up with. Thank!

The only technical solution (well ... not really a solution, but something good) to protect the PHP application sold to the client should be running. In addition, you cannot do much to protect your code and / or enforce the license.

Also your question is similar to this: Is there any code for obfuscator for PHP?

You enter a marketplace where remarketing is a huge concern. If the CMS cannot be renamed and the code is blocked, does rebranding become impossible? If I were in a position where I had to buy CMS for my web firm, this would be an immediate transaction breaker.
