Android 1.x Contacts.Extensions for custom account type?

I am writing a social networking application that has a contact sync feature. I have a working code (from an example I found here ) that inserts the contacts on v2.x into the synchronization adapter.

However, Motorola Blur software does not recognize 2.x contacts (I use 2.2 Moto build on Droid X). Blur uses the 1.x contacts API, but I'm having trouble finding / understanding examples of how to use it. This page shows how to execute a query by name, but I want to: a) add and b) request the type of user account (or, possibly, MIME).

The v2 code I use creates a new raw contact, creates a "StructuredName" data record, and then a user-defined MIME data record.

How to make equivalent in API 1.x (level 3)? I think the Contacts.Extensions class is for this purpose, but at best, the documentation is unclear.
