Multiple h1 tags on one page

Question

Im working on a site that currently has several H1 tags per page. What if any cost has to be paid for SEO using this practice?

Should I go over and switch them with h2 / h3?

Currently, Google indexing largely prefers the content of your meta tags (the most important meta description) over the content of your h1 tags. Multiple h1 tags are not a problem, and in fact it can be a positive thing for SEO if they are all semantically accurate.
