How to write a program to speed up YouTube playback

I want to watch YouTube videos at a higher playback speed. Some time ago I asked if there is a utility that can speed up video playback. The only thing mentioned was a closed source project for Windows. I am not a fan of either Windows or closed source.

Another answer mentions that you can download videos from YouTube and play them. Unfortunately this does not work anymore. I tried several Firefox add-ons and they all do not load. So, now I think I need to build something. I see two options:

  • Create a Firefox addon that allows me to change the video playback speed during playback.
  • Find the alternative source code for Adobe Flash Player and update the source code to have variable audio and video playback speeds.

I'm not sure any option can give me the control I want. I do not have much experience with the flash, and I was hoping that someone more experienced could give advice on where to start.

I think you really won't find a standard flash-only solution. Although I saw something similar for mp3, written in a flash, to change the speed. It worked very well, but I think it's impossible to do with a NetStream object - the one used to stream video.

, speed fastforward. - seek, , - .
