Access the property bag for a list item using the SharePoint client object model or web services

Question

Just ask if it is possible to access and update the properties in the properties bag of a list item using the SharePoint 2010 client object model? I see that it is possible to get a bag with a web resource (but not install), but cannot see any support for a property package in a list or list item.

Alternatively, if you can access properties through SharePoint Web Services, this will also be useful.
