What are the advantages and disadvantages of ICU?

My team is tasked with embedding Unicode in our software, which contains over a million lines of code. We support the MFC client and server on Windows, AIX, or Solaris with an Oracle or SQL Server database. ICU looks like a very useful tool. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using ICU? Does ICU describe ads without major errors?
