Change page without updating div on page

Question

Hi, I am looking for a tutorial to understand how I can create a page with a div that does not refresh when the page URL changes.

Ex. Facebook chat does not update when I go from URL to another.

AJAX is definitely used, although it may not seem like that because the actual URL is changing. Most AJAX applications simply change the hash of the URL (somesite.com/page/#feature1).
