Backing up the Eclipse workbench

What will I lose if I skip the directory .metadata/when backing up the Eclipse workspace? (Is there some kind of documentation describing what Eclipse stores in this directory)? I noticed that it changes very often (essentially every time I use Eclipse (Galileo).

I saw this question , but I'm not interested in making backup copies of plug-ins and settings (also because I'm not sure that they will work properly when restoring after reinstalling my PC or on a new PC). I'm just interested in making backup copies of my projects (source code, libraries, possible data, .svnand directories .git). So, can I safely ignore the directory .metadata/?
