Is there an alternative to Pidgin, but with less restrictive licensing?

Recently came across pidgin . This is great and does what I want, but I'm not too keen on the GPL. Other alternatives with less restrictive licenses?

I would prefer the library to be C or C ++, as I am most familiar with these languages, but an interesting IM library implemented in python.

Take a look at kde kopete . The chat client itself is still the GPL, but the libkopete core library is the LGPL. This way you can freely contact him.
