What methods are used by programmers to write supported integration / functional / acceptance tests?

Integration / Functional / Acceptance tests are inherently difficult to maintain for many reasons: they take a long time to run, it is difficult to maintain a green color sequentially, they may accidentally seem messy, cumbersome to debug, etc. etc. However, they can be invaluable if someone has a reliable unit test suite.

Does such a set, just a trumpet sleep? How can teams manage a consistent green, low-maintenance non unit test?
