The term "sentence" in the context of programming

I have come across statements such as the “default clause” in the context of a switch statement or the “JOIN clause” in the context of SQL, and I know what these expressions mean, but still I would like to see a clear definition of the term.

This is almost the same as in English (or in another language). A sentence is an incomplete fragment of a sentence, or in this case an expression that encapsulates an actor and an action. In your join clause example, the action is the join, and the actor is the join table.
