Play video through .FLV vs. .MP4 and .OGV site

I read a lot of Q&A on this site and started collecting a lot of information about video playback. I have setup and running tests using both Flowplayer and JW Player in Chrome, Firefox, IE7 and IE8, Opera and Safari.

I read a wonderful article that helps me get my hands and thoughts around playing videos on my website. It is located here β†’ http://websitehelpers.com/video/

Thus, on the advice of Michael Bluejay in my article above, I try to cover all the bases by creating .MP4 and .OGV using one of the two players listed above.

Here is what I find:

  • in browsers that Mr. Blujay point out must play .MP4 - they do, but only with the Flowpayer plugin. JW Player does not work in IE7 or 8, although this is also assumed (according to the article and according to the JW Player website).
  • It’s also hard for me to get my video in .OGV format (a separate question is posted here about stack overflow with this effect - https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4898260/looking-for-free-conversion-software-to-output-ogv- ogg )
  • Firefox doesn't want to play .MP4 - they need an incomprehensible .OGV (does anyone know why this is?)

Therefore, instead of creating .MP4 and .OGV files in video format, would it not be better to create .FLV and play this file? Currently, browsers on people's computers are not yet ready for HTML5. So is it not better for me to just create a .flv and get it over with? Somehow, the user needs a flash plugin so I can use Flowplayer or JW Player.

As far as I understand, is this all or am I missing something? (I'm new to posting videos on web pages and just starting to learn and test).

If anyone has a simple method or solution, can you share it here?

Thank you for helping us improve the speed of playing videos through a web page.
