What is the difference between exiting and calling in WebSphere MQ FTE?

I was asked recently, so I thought that I would put the question and answer here.

What is the difference between FTE output and FTE call? What are they for and when do I use them?

Background
WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition (WMQ FTE) is a Java-based WebSphere MQ application that provides an enterprise file transfer platform. A transfer occurs between two agents: one at the source and one at the destination. There are four points on the transfer life cycle where external code can be called - before the transfer starts with both the source and target agents, and after the transfer is completed, the agents of the source and destination. Two methods by which you can call external code are outputs and calls.
