MySQL slots for PHP / PDO

I appreciate switching to pdo on some hosts (VPS), but it seems to require more memory.

Q: in php.ini there is a setting:

pdo_mysql.cache_size = 2000

I can not find much information about this, this applies to mysql slots, what is the purpose and math? After all, mysqld has its own cache - why also pdo too?

Yours faithfully,
