What is a special certificate for distributing test applications for iOS?

I am developing an application for the iPhone and must send it to my client. In turn, my client will distribute it to many other people for testing end users.

Which Provisioning profile, certificate, or code signing will accomplish this task? I heard something about special certificates; is a special certificate relevant for this task?
