Ask Autoconf to manually check the library if there is no .pc file

I'm relatively new to using Autoconf, and so far I have used PKG_CHECK_MODULES, and it worked for me. I ran into a pack, in particular with the Debian libmhash-dev v0.9.9.9-1, which does not include a file .pcfor pkg-configto use.

How to tell Autoconf to check mhashand pass the correct flags in g ++?

I’m not sure if this is the place for this diatribe (I’m sure it isn’t!), But my learning curve for a long time looked like this: foo is a great idea, but many old Luddites say it is bad, but I will use it because it is great. (wait a few months) Oh no, the people who said that foo were bad were right, but now I have a few months of work and I will have a lot of extra work in front of me to fix it. Bummer.
