The maximum number of files in a directory on Amazon S3

I currently store ~ 3 million image files in a single directory on my server, which causes serious performance problems. I would like to move them to Amazon S3, and I wonder if I need to use a hierarchical folder structure or can I store them in one folder on S3.

I get a large percentage of traffic from Google Image Search, and I don’t want to harm my SEO by changing the image path, so a single folder on S3 would be ideal if there weren’t any performance issues. I assume LIST operations will be slow, but I'm fine.
