What does IIS consist of and how does it work?

I have created and set up websites for some time, but I never understood what IIS is.

Is this an executable file? A group of executable files? Some dll files? What is its connection with W3wp.exe?

Does this explain anywhere on MSDN?

Thank.

[EDIT] Alright, that inetinfo.exe. I found a detailed description here: http://www.west-wind.com/presentations/howaspnetworks/howaspnetworks.asp
