Key or Long Identifier in Google App Engine (JDO)

Question

I am using JDO with Google App Engine for storage, and I am wondering what is the difference between Key and Long object for id?

I find the long identifier more practical, am I missing something?

A Keyis a globally unique identifier that uniques identifies an entity throughout the application engine. It consists of two parts:

A path describing which application the object belongs to, any ancestor keys, and entity type.
ID (long) or key name (string) .
