Custom Attribute Sort

I have an attribute that I created, called "sales_rank", which I set to use as a sortable attribute. However, when I select it from the list of products, it does not sort as I expect. Upon further verification, it seems that it is sorted as a text field, and not as a number. This means that it will go 101, 1014, 102, 1035, 104, 11, 1204, etc.

How to fix it? When creating an attribute, there is no way to tell it that number. You can select "Integer" from the "Input Validation" field, so what's the answer? I haven't tried it yet ...

Any thoughts?
