I would like to automatically comment on texts for students of foreign languages with the translation of complex words.
For example, if the source text is:
El gato esta en la casa de mis vecinos
becomes
El gato esta en la casa de mis vecinos (neighbors)
The first step is to determine which words are difficult. This can be done by lemmatizing the words in the source text and comparing them with a list of "simple words" (a basic dictionary of 1500-2000 words). Those not found on this list will be referred to as “hard words”. This process seems simple enough using the Natural Language Tool Kit (NLTK) for Python.
There are several difficulties in the words that need to be translated as a couple, for example, "newlyweds" or the phrasal verbs "he called me up ", or the German 'er ruft mich a ' (anrufen). Here the words cannot be considered individually. For phrasal verbs and the like, an understanding of grammar may be necessary.
