I believe that you can not read sms directly from your mailbox. However, you can start the j2me application and wait for incoming SMS. In other words, you cannot receive sms if the application does not work.
Unfortunately, you will need to wait for midp3 to achieve this if you are not using BlackBerry sdk, in which case there are classes that allow you to read the message box
