Gracefully Degrading ContentEditable on iPhone and iPad

To my horror, I found out that the attribute is contentEditable=truenot working properly on the iPhone or iPad.

Is there a way to gracefully degrade the contentEditable div without resorting to the text area and without losing all the benefits of DHTML formatting on iPhone or iPad?
