What is the 'linkonce' section

What is the 'linkonce' section, and for added pleasure, how does it differ from the comdat section?

To be clear, I am familiar with how comdat sections work, how they are used, etc. In googling, linkonce is almost exclusively discussed in forums where he suggested that the meaning / intent / purpose of this section is already fairly well understood.
