Sharepoint development in Visual Studio 2010

Is it possible to develop for Sharepoint using Visual Studio 2010, pointing to Sharepoint installed on a separate server? When I try to add a sharepoint connection to VS2010, it gives my error that the sharepoint server is not installed on my machine. Do I really have to install it on my machine? Can't I just connect to the sharepoint server to develop the application?

Unfortunately, you cannot work with a remote installation of SharePoint. On your development machine, the SharePoint installation must be running.
