How to get a SurfaceHolder with a valid surface (required for EGL.eglCreateWindowSurface)?

I am trying to initialize GLES with EGL (because I want to draw from the main stream instead of using Renderer and drawing from inside onDrawFrame). I get an error: "Make sure that the SurfaceView or its associated SurfaceHolder has a valid surface." Obviously, mEgl.eglCreateWindowSurface fails because the surfaceHolder does not have a valid surface. How to get a SurfaceHolder with a valid surface to continue?

My Activity.onCreate method:

The log output that I get using the / adb logcat platform tool is:
