Android: play and record video simultaneously

I am developing a video chat such as an Android app. Can I record and play video on the screen at the same time? Can I make videos on top of each other (FaceTime style), or should you have side by side? Can I use the MediaPlayer and MediaRecorder classes or do I need to use a lower level API?
