How to draw a 3D background in games

I am trying to make a 3D race in iphone using OPENGL ES 1.x.

I do not know how to draw a background sky in my scene. I tried using only planes for the background, but where should I place this plane? I mean, if I placed this plane outside the entire track, then the truncation is not so big as to show that the planes are in the scene.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

You can create a small ski platform or box, as suggested by Davido and the Turvons link, which is centered around the viwer and fits into the truncation. You draw this first without writing to the depth buffer. Then you draw other material and, since the skybox is not written to the depth buffer, it is simply overwritten, with the exception of the parts where scene objects are not displayed, which are the image points where the sky should be visible.

You need a dome of the sky. Take a look at this site, it contains many links that will help you.
