<span> vs <figure> vs <area>
I am wondering what the difference is between 'span' and the new HTML5 tags' and 'area'.
What is the purpose of each of them and what are the appropriate applications? For example, I often use "span" with a background image, and not with the "img" tag to exclude the possibility of selecting an image; What is the best element to achieve this?

<span>is an inline element, used essentially as an inline div. This is "a common shell for phrasing content that does not represent anything in itself." ( W3C specification )
<figure> <figcaption>, -, " , ". ( W3C)
<area> <map>.
div img png . img user-select: none; , .
