Expires maximum on Nginx

Question

I have a few questions about this directive:

• Is this what tells the browser how often it should extract the file?
• What are the recommended hours / days settings / maximum for this on the css website / image files?
• If I set this value to max, but then update some files on the server, will user browsers not receive new files before they expire?
