Unicode fonts for Japanese

I am creating a game. I have a user interface with text. We recently wanted to add a Japanese version, but I have font problems. I use stb_freetype to rasterize fonts and I support Unicode, so this should not be a problem. But most fonts do not seem to contain Janapese characters, on Windows I found what Arial Unicode does. But its size is 26 MB, which is much larger than our full game!

I saw Unicode and fonts , but it does not fully cover my questions.

So basically I ask about two things:

  • Do Janapese fonts have different fonts? I mean, Western fonts are serif, sans-serif, or more exotic versions. Does this also apply to Asian fonts?

  • I would probably use a system font, and not such a large file itself. I know how to find Arial Unicode on Windows, but our game also has versions for Mac OSX, Linux, and iOS. Where can I find Unicode fonts (and which ones to use) on these platforms? I'm especially interested in Linux because it is the least known platform for us.
