I am about to launch a mid-sized web application, and I am considering developing using the ASP.NET Razor syntax web page structure (rather than MVC). But, as I have seen, many people consider "web pages" to be newbie oriented.
I have been developing professional large-scale web applications in ASP.NET Web Forms for several years, but I have always been inclined towards pure html / javascript code more than to server controls, therefore I find the Razor syntax very attractive. I am using Visual Studio and do not view web pages for helper functions or other newbies for beginners.
With that in mind, what are your views on the scalability, speed and long-term development of this approach?

Browse for ASP.NET MVC 3 and then select the Razor viewer. It provides you with WebPages syntax combined with the full power of an MVC template built from an established platform such as ASP.NET in terms of scalability and long-term development. You cannot dream of the best as far as the Microsoft stack is concerned.
In terms of performance, Web pages are asp.net and become complex, so performance should be similar to WebForms and MVC.
