Lots of HTML canvas or one big?

I am planning an interface for displaying a large number of small widgets (drawn on <canvas>) that can be moved (for example, in a list that is sorted differently using jQuery). The number of widgets can be from 10 to 100.

I could do this with one large canvas and just draw a lot of widgets in the right place. Or I could have many <canvas>ses in <li>s. Are canvases light enough for this kind of thing? Are there any good reasons for choosing one or the other?
