What happens when I enter the wrong password?

Whenever I type the wrong password on my Ubuntu / Gmail, etc., it will take some more time to request the password again. But if you enter the correct password, he immediately logs in.

Why? Is it because the algorithm is best to enter the correct password? Is it an illusion then that causes it?

This is a common security measure to prevent users from unauthorized use of a large number of lines to find your password.
