Talking with a scanner with php script

Question

I run a small business, but I need to be more organized in terms of the letters and accounts that I receive. This is what I want to accomplish:

• When I receive an invoice or other information on paper, I would put it in the scanner tray and leave it there.

• Every 15 minutes, my linux box asks my scanner if there is anything to scan, and if so it starts the scanning process and puts the file in a folder.

Can someone point me in the right direction, how can I talk to my scanner from a PHP script, for example, "Is there anything that can be scanned?" and "Start scanning, put the file here" ...
