Aiming for freezing, but not parental

Question

I have a dynamically generated list that has potentially up to 5 levels. I want the specified element text to be underlined when I hover over the specified element, but not whether it is a parent.

you see when you hover over “this”, the above parent lit also underlines.

Any ideas?

This seems difficult to achieve because when you specify a child li, you also effectively specify its parent.
