Limiting HTML5 Storage Space on iPad Safari

Question

To clarify, I mean the key / value pairs of localStorage, not Web SQL DB or IndexedDB.

Is this a strict 5 MB limit for the iPad, or is it true that it is unlimited, but will it ask the user to allow / deny if you exceed 5 MB?

I hope to use localStorage to store large amounts of data, and therefore it is important that it is unlimited.
