JPanel target?

This JPanel entry seems to focus on this container as a means of setting the background color. Oracle on how to use JPanel . Should I conclude that if I am satisfied with the gray default background in ubuntu / gnome / Java programs, is there no need to use this object? Is there object-oriented programming for using this object?

JPanels is a way to create a logical “separation” of space, if that makes sense. For example, if you are thinking about HTML, you can simply place elements one after another on the page (as some old HTML pages actually look), but it is much more aesthetically pleasing to use a container, such as a table, or CSS-style DIV tags to create sections on the page and place elements in relation to each other in a much more specific way.
