How to set local notification in Mac OS X?

I am writing an application for mac os x and every day I have to display a notification to remind users of something. A notification should appear even if the application is not running, and I cannot use push notification.

I think the best solution would be a local notification, just like on iOS. I also know that UILocalNotification is only available on iOS. But I think there should be an alternative solution.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Is it possible? If so, what is the best practice for this?
