Increase Heap Memory for Android

I am developing an application on Android 2.2 that takes up extensive memory, and my biggest operation may not be complete due to low memory. Can someone give me a solution on how I can increase the heap size of the application. I tried Android: largeHeap = "true", but it is not supported in Android API-8.

The heap size depends on the hardware of your application. For example, 16mb on G1 and 32mb on one of them. Do not think that you can handle it. If you are targeting versions below 3.0, that is.
