Difference between machine image and instance in virtualization?

These two terms are often used in virtualization. Is there a subtle difference? Or are these completely different things in the context of virtualization.

The image is static data containing software (OS and applications along with configuration files and data, etc.) that the virtual machine will start after it starts. It is usually stored on disk (although you can store it anywhere).
