Set multidimensional array along key path from array values?

Sorry for the terrible name, the best I could think of at that time! Say I have an array of "path", for example:

What would be the most efficient method to end up with an array below?

Just iterate over it with something like array_shift or array_pop:

$inarray = array('this', 'is', 'the', 'path',);
$tree = array();
while (count($inarray)) {
    $tree = array(array_pop($inarray) => $tree,);
}

Not verified, but what is its main structure. Recursion is also well suited for this task. Also, if you do not want to modify the original array:

$inarray = array('this', 'is', 'the', 'path',);
$result = array();
foreach (array_reverse($inarray) as $key)

I use two similar functions to get and set values ​​by their path in the array:

function array_get($arr, $path)
