Google CustomSearchControl shows inconsistent page links

Question

When using CustomSearchControl, the number of results pages depends on which page you are viewing. For example, go to this site and search for: car

On the first page of results, it will show links to 3 pages, but when you click on 2 or 3, it ends on page 2.

Why is this happening, and is there a workaround for this?

If it is possible to get the actual number of results and create your own pagination?
