Saved Mathematica file not actually saved

I have a well-developed Control-S reflex (i.e. I obsessively save my work), but when Mathematica crashes with opening a file, the saved changes are not restored when restarting Mathematica and opening the file. It returns to the state of the file when I first opened it before making (and saving) any changes.

How can I actually save my work without having to save, close and reopen the laptop with the same obsessive regularity that I "save"?

I am running Mathematica 8.0 on a Windows XP x64 computer.

Edit: just to clarify, I'm not so worried about the crash. I am concerned that the savings are not saved.

This may be the case when Windows does not erase the disk cache to disk. You might want to try the Sysinternals Sync tool . "Use it when you want to know that changed file data is safely stored on your hard drives."

You can get Mathematica to invoke Sync using Runand automate the process in the background using scheduled tasks like in this answer .

Edit-> Settings-> Advanced; Open the optional inspector.

Search: NotebookAutosave

This will be saved every time you press shift + enter. This can be a disk load for large files.
